Scoppio del Carro ( Easter Sunday ):
Florence’s Scoppio del Carro ( Explosion of the Cart ) dates back to the 11th century, when a carousel of fireworks was lit to spread the good news of Easter. A ceremonial cart stuffed with incendiaries is wheeled into Piazza del Duomo ( Cathedral of Florence ) , and a wire is run to the statue of the Virgin on top of the Dome and into the cathedral. At about 11pm the wire is lit and a mechanical dove slides down to the cart causing an explosion, igniting the fireworks. Magnificent !
